10-yr-old rape survivor travels for abortion after US banned abortion': 'cruel... 'says Biden

According to police officials, a 10-year-old rape survivor had to fly from Ohio in the United States to Indiana for a medical abortion after becoming pregnant due to a near-total prohibition on abortion. In the rape case, law enforcement agents have taken a 27-year-old suspect into custody.

The event has revived the abortion prohibition debate in the United States, drawing attention to the US Supreme Court's decision last month to overturn Roe v. Wade. President Joe Biden cited the episode as evidence of the court's "cruel effects." "Imagine being that little child," Biden stated, criticising the US Supreme Court decision. "Ten years old... raped, six weeks pregnant, traumatised, forced to travel to another state," the US president was cited in the Washington Post as saying.

Biden earlier stated that the court had not prohibited women from travelling to places where abortion is legal, and that he would do everything in his power to ensure that women's rights to travel, obtain medication, and contraception were preserved.

Meanwhile, Democratic-controlled states in the United States are providing assistance to women who want to fly abroad for abortions. The governors of California, Washington, and Oregon on the west coast of the United States issued an united "multi-state commitment" to work together to protect patients and caregivers, according to the Associated Press.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court struck down the Roe v Wade decision, which had institutionalized abortion-related protections in the country. In America, women no longer have the right to seek abortions as a result of the verdict.
