At least 13 people have died in a tragic incident in the north-eastern state of Assam after swallowing poisonous mushrooms, with almost a dozen more in critical condition.
Dr Prasanta Dihingia, the Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital, told the media that 13 persons died as a result of mushroom poisoning while receiving treatment.
All of the victims of mushroom poisoning died at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) while receiving treatment, according to Dr. Dihingia.
In the last five days, 35 patients with mushroom poisoning from the upper Assam districts of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia were admitted to the Assam Medical College, with 13 of them dying in the last two days, according to him.
“On Monday, four people died, and nine more died on Tuesday. All of the victims had eaten toxic wild mushrooms at home, mistaking them for edible mushrooms. They experienced nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramping after consuming “,.he added.
Seven people died in the Sonari area of Charaideo district, including a toddler, five in the Barbaruah area of Dibrugarh district, and one in the Sivasagar district. The majority of the victims were from the tea garden community.
