At least 150 stores were destroyed by a large fire that broke out at a market in the Jorhat district of Assam late on Thursday, according to the police. In the centre of Jorhat town, at Chowk Bazar, 25 fire fighters were battling a fire that, according to them, had not yet been put out.
They also said that the fire, which is thought to have been started by an electrical short circuit at a store, spread quickly across the crowded market.
According to the authorities, no casualties were reported because all businesses were closed and their owners and employees had gone home.Most of those destroyed, according to them, were supermarket and clothing stores.
