5 Manipur districts are under curfew following calls to remove the barricade

Following a request for a march by the women's wing of a conglomerate of powerful Meitei community groups for the removal of a security roadblock at Phougakchao Ikhai hamlet, a curfew has been enforced in five districts of ethnically violent Manipur.
The collective COCOMI wants the Assam Rifles to leave Manipur because they are unequal. Meitei women's organizations have protested the force numerous times. Other tribal groups, including the Kuki-Zo-Hmar, have asked the Union government to keep the troop in place.

Late on Tuesday night, separate orders imposing the curfew "due to developing law and order conditions" were issued by the district authorities of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal. The curfew was previously loosened for 13 to 15 hours every day.
People with knowledge of the situation claimed security officers were attempting to implement the curfew and that there had been no reports of any untoward incidents.

S Ranjan Singh, a minister for Manipur, urged COCOMI to rescind the call and noted that the administration has removed numerous obstacles.

The Assam Rifles have helped Manipur, which has been devastated, return to normal. A Manipuri leader was given legal notice last month for allegedly accusing the force of cooperating with Kuki militants during the confrontations with Meiteis.

The Assam Rifles are charged in the Manipur Police's first information report (FIR) with preventing them from chasing Kuki militants across a buffer zone.
