8 ex-Indian Navy personnel jailed in Qatar are given consular access by Indian officials

Eight former members of the Indian Navy who are currently being held in Qatar on unspecified charges were granted consular access to Indian officials on Thursday. The external affairs ministry has stated that it is actively pursuing the case for the men's prompt release. The eight men have been held for almost four months. They were employed by Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, a private company owned by a former Oman Air Force officer that offers training and other services to Qatar's armed forces.

"We received our second consular access today. The detainees were permitted to meet with representatives from our embassy and have their welfare checked. Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the external affairs ministry, said, "We will continue to provide all available consular support in this situation.According to Bagchi, the consular access gave Indian officials the chance to "determine what further support" the detained individuals require. He declined to comment when asked about any charges that might be brought against the guys, stating that the Qatari government should be contacted instead. He declared, "We are concerned about the situation, and our embassy is aggressively pursuing this case. Some of the men's families who live in Doha were able to meet them, and the Indian government is working to make it easier for the families to visit their home country, he said.

According to earlier statements from the external affairs ministry, some of the jailed men who have family in Doha are permitted to visit them once a week.

On August 30, each man was taken into custody.Official justification for their detention has not yet been given by Qatari authorities.

Many of the men who were arrested held important positions in the Indian Navy and even held command of warships. One of the imprisoned Indians is Commander (retired) Purnendu Tiwari, a former managing director of Dahra Global who has received recognition for his services in Qatar.
