According to a top official quoted by the news agency AFP, Henan, the third-most populated province in China, is currently dealing with an increase in Covid infections since about 90% of the population has been exposed to Covid-19. Kan Quancheng, the director of the health commission for central Henan province, stated that as of January 6, 2023, "the province's Covid infection rate is 89.0 percent."

The population of the province is 99.4 million. According to the official, this suggests that about 88.5 million people in Henan may currently be Covid positive. Kan Quancheng noted that clinic visits reached their high in the middle of December and then continued to decline.

This occurs at the same time that China immediately withdrew its strict "zero-Covid" policy, which had been in effect since the pandemic started. There were sporadic protests across China in response to the policy, which involved lockdowns, quarantines, and mass testing. Beijing also opened its border with Hong Kong and abolished the requirement for quarantine for all visitors from abroad.

Official figures from last week, however, showed that just 120,000 individuals had contracted the disease and 30 had passed away since China loosened Covid limits. This occurs at a time when China has tightened the criteria for Covid deaths. With experts warning that Covid data from China are no longer indicative of the full scope of the outbreak, Beijing has decided to end the requirement for mass testing.
