Akhilesh Yadav criticises the BJP in response to the box office success of Pathaan

Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday for the box office success of the Shah Rukh Khan film "Pathaan." "Pathaan's success as a movie is a victory for a good ideology in India and the rest of the globe. The public's appropriate response to the BJP's divisive tactics is this, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh tweeted. The spy thriller, which Siddharth Anand directed, managed to earn close to 300 crore at the box office and is anticipated to break more records. Before the movie's release, there was criticism around Deepika Padukone's saffron bikini. Ram Kadam and Narottam Mishra, both BJP officials, had accused the producers of offending religious sensitivities.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged BJP members and leaders to hold off on making pointless comments about movies, claiming that doing so would put the party's development programme on hold. The call for a boycott, though, was unable to stop "Pathaan" from breaking box office records ever since its January 25 premiere. In the last five days, the movie has raked in a staggering 542 crore in international box office receipts. Shah Rukh Khan spoke about the controversies that dogged the movie before its release during an event yesterday.

“We are all playing characters to make you happy. If we say things in the film, none of them are meant to hurt any sentiment or anybody. It is just entertainment”, he had said.
