Ampareen Lyndoh hits out at MP demanding minority status for Hindus in Meghalaya
Trinamool Congress MP Shanta Chhetri of West Bengal urged in the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the Hindu community be awarded minority status in Meghalaya, citing the Centre's argument in the Supreme Court that states can consider granting Hindus minority status if they believe it appropriate.
Meanwhile, suspended Congress Legislature Party (CLP) MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh from Meghalaya slammed the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) for its MP's demand in the Rajya Sabha for minority status for Hindus in Meghalaya, saying it is unbecoming of the AITC.
"That's why it's so unbecoming of the AITC." We'd like to see campaigns in the 2023 elections that aren't about dividing communities; we should stay away from those areas because they'll only cause more confusion in the long run," Ampareen said.
The suspended CLP legislator suggested that leaders of various political parties should be cautious when raising issues of this nature in order to avoid a snowball impact on society.
"In my opinion, that is an irresponsible statement," Lyngdoh continued, "and one should prevent political parties from accepting and towing these lines."
She believes the AITC might have discussed a slew of other issues that the state requires while ignoring the 'communal tone.'
