Meghalaya: Assam claims violence-hit Mukroh village is within their borders
Assam and Meghalaya have both claimed villages that have been hit by violence on their territory

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in a reply in the legislature that the disputed Mukroh village is under the state's authority, potentially igniting a new debate over the interstate borders between Assam and Meghalaya. Prestone Tynsong, the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya, responded by saying that the village is unquestionably a part of the state.
Six persons were killed on November 22 of last year, including five Meghalaya peasants, in an altercation between the Assam Police, forest guards, and residents near the border with Meghalaya. The Assam-Meghalaya interstate border village of Mukroh in the West Jaintia Hills district saw several injuries.
Mr. Sarma stated that Mukroh village is a part of the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam in a written response to a question posed by BJP MLA Bidya Sing Engleng.
The statement made by Mr. Sarma was described as "unfortunate" by the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya. The regional interstate boundary committees would be reinstituted, Mr. Tynsong told reporters, and talks between the two states would likely soon resume.
“It is unfortunate that he (Assam CM) made the statement on the floor of the Assam Assembly. But let me tell you very clearly that Mukroh area falls under Meghalaya,” Tynsong added.
