Assam: The biggest River Island on Earth 'Majuli' is disappearing with time

India's north-east is undeniably a land of natural splendour. The largest river island in the world, Majuli River Island, is another marvel of NorthEast India situated in Assam. In order to claim the title of largest river island in the world, this scenic river island on the Brahmaputra River defeated Marajo in Brazil. Majuli is primarily known as a tourist destination due to its vibrant culture, which complements the area's beautiful vegetation and enormous variety of flora and wildlife.

An area of about 880 km2 (340 miles2) is covered by Majuli in the Brahmaputra River in northeastern India. Brahmaputra floods frequently, which causes Majuli to erode severely. Its area is thought to have decreased by around a third over the past 30 to 40 years. Around 160,000 people live in Majuli.

However, there is impending peril. The largest river island in the world is now less than half the size it once was due to constant erosion and flooding. Will the Brahmaputra nibble away one of the largest river islands in the world? is one of the concerns that the scientists are currently grappling with. And if research is to be believed, specialists predict that this island would fully submerge by 2030 as a result of an overwhelming discharge of sediment.

Majuli is fading away, Majuli, previously the largest river island in the world and holder of a Guinness World Record, is gradually disappearing. Water from the Brahmaputra river is dissolving it.
