BioNTech started work on Omicron vaccine; WHO warns 'very high risk' of global outbreak

According to the news agency Reuters, BioNTech announced on Monday that it has begun working on a vaccine for Omicron, a concerning new coronavirus type discovered in South Africa. It was unclear whether the Covid-19 shot would need to be reworked. The WHO warned on Monday that the Omicron variant of coronavirus poses a "very high" risk of global outbreaks, as more countries reported cases, prompting border closures and reigniting concerns about the economy's recovery after a two-year pandemic.

The severity of Omicron, which was initially discovered in southern Africa, might take weeks, according to scientists. Its introduction has sparked a significant worldwide response, with countries implementing travel bans and other restrictions, fearful that it could spread quickly even among vaccinated people.

The World Health Organization warned its 194 member countries that "the total worldwide risk connected to the novel strain of concern Omicron is rated as very high," warning of "severe implications" in some locations. BioNTech said earlier on Friday that it expected further data on a concerning new coronavirus strain discovered in South Africa within the next two weeks, which will help it evaluate whether its vaccine, developed in collaboration with Pfizer Inc (PFE.N), will need to be redesigned.

If necessary, Pfizer and BioNTech aim to be ready to supply a new vaccine customized to the evolving variety in around 100 days.

When approached for reaction, BioNTech responded in a statement, "We realize the concern of experts and have promptly launched studies on variation B.1.1.529."
