Capt. Williamson Sangma Technical University to become Meghalaya's first state university after Cabinet nod.

The state Cabinet on Friday passed and approved a cabinet memo to rename the Captain Williamson Sangma University to Capt Williamson Sangma State University.

Government spokesman Paul Lyngdoh revealed this, saying, "Fundamentally, the issue here is we created the university in 2011 with emphasis on high-quality education, in the area of engineering, life sciences, etc., but today the Cabinet took up the matter of establishing its first state-run university, which means that fundamentally we have decided to bring this into the Cabinet...the captain Williamson Sangma Technical University Tura now will become Captain Williamson Sangma State University."

As part of the announcement, Lyngdoh said that the House would be presented with a bill to rename the institution Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University.
Lyngdoh responded when asked how long it will take for the institution to start operating, "We have already passed and endorsed a cabinet document to turn the technical university into a state university. Infrastructure, employees, and facility will be added. Also, he stated that college affiliation will take place after the university is operational.

"Our efforts now will be to try to develop the various departments so that this university becomes a success story," Lyngdoh said, noting that the idea has received the approval of the law department, the finance department, and the personnel department.

In 2011, the West Garo Hills District's Tura hosted the establishment of the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University.

Lyngdoh added that college affiliation will take place as soon as the state institution was operational. The North Eastern Hill University(NEHU) is currently connected to practically all of the colleges in the state .
