Captain Abhinandan Varthaman to be awarded Vir Chakra for shooting down Pakistani F16
Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman of the Indian Air Force is slated to receive the Vir Chakra from President Ram Nath Kovind today.
Varthaman, then a Wing Commander, shot down a Pakistan F-16 fighter plane during low-altitude combat on February 27, 2019, and had to eject in enemy territory after his own plane was shot down.
Abhinandan, who was Wing Commander at the time, was involved in a dogfight with Pakistani fighter planes and was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for downing an F-16 combat plane. After taking down the F-16, Abhinandan's MiG-21 fighter plane was shot down, and he landed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where the Pakistan Army apprehended him. Due to intense pressure from the Indian side, as well as internment, the Pakistan Army was compelled to release him.
