CM Himanta In Support Of UCC, " Every Muslim Women Want Uniform Civil Code"

On Saturday, April 30, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking during his visit to New Delhi backed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying every Muslim woman wants it to be implemented. The need for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the introduction of the legislation is necessary to give justice to all Muslim women.

"Everybody wants UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home 3 other wives. Ask any Muslim woman. UCC is not my issue, it is an issue for all Muslim women. If they are to be given justice, after the scrapping of Triple Talaq, UCC will have to be brought," Sarma said.

"The Muslim community in Assam has one religion but culture and origin have two different sections. One of them is indigenous to Assam & has no history of migration in the last 200 yrs. That section wants that they are not mixed with migrated Muslims and be given a separate identity," he said.
Differentiating between native and migrant Muslims in Assam, the native Muslims of Assam for the last 200 years do not want to be mixed with migrated Muslims and should be given a separate identity.

The state government will decide on the identity of the indigenous and the migrant Muslims in Assam. "Sub-committee formed and it presented the report. But it's the sub committee's report, the government hasn't taken the decision yet. It'll decide the future who's indigenous Muslim & who's migrant Muslim. No opposition to this in Assam. They know the difference, it has to be given official form," Sarma said in his visit to New Delhi over UCC.

On the other hand by Opposing the argument that the implementation of UCC is mentioned in the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP), the Member of Parliament (MP) and AIMIM chief, Asaduddin Owaisi said, "UCC is not required in the country."
Also quoting over provision of Goa's common code he said, "According to Goa's common code, a Hindu man can marry another woman if his wife fails to deliver a male child by the age of 30. BJP has the government in that state too but they are silent over this".

The UCC aims to implement common personal laws for all citizens, of their religion, sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Presently, the personal religious laws of different communities are governed based on their religious texts.
