Congress protestors likely to 'gherao' PM's residence; Reports

Even though Delhi Police threatened legal punishment if leaders disobeyed the prohibitory orders put in place in New Delhi district, with the exception of Jantar Mantar, Congress will nonetheless go forwards with the "gherao" of the Prime Minister's residence over price increases on Friday.

With MPs going to Rashtrapati Bhavan and gheraoing the prime minister's official residence on Lok Kalyan Marg, the main opposition party had called for a national protest over "record-breaking" price increases.

The Enforcement Directorate has also barricaded the homes of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former President Rahul Gandhi, who were questioned in the National Herald case, and is conducting a search of Herald House during the protest.

Amrutha Guguloth, the deputy commissioner of police in New Delhi, wrote to K C Venugopal, the general secretary of the Congress organisation, informing him that police had learned "through reliable sources" that he and his followers would be staging a protest.

The "entire region of New Delhi district, barring Jantar Mantar," she stated, will be subject to the provisions of Section 144 (CrPC).
