Death of student at NIT Silchar: Father threatens to lodge an FIR

The father of a third-year engineering student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, who was allegedly discovered dead in his dormitory room on September 15 has threatened to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the university.
The student who allegedly committed suicide was a Ziro native of Aurnachal Pradesh.

His businessman father informed HT on Wednesday that he would file a FIR against the NIT on Thursday.

"On September 16, I received up my son's body from Silchar Medical College. I wanted to prepare the burial in a dignified manner, but I had always wondered why my son had to kill himself. Now I'm going to figure out why, and filing this FIR will be my first move," he declared.

Since September 17, more than 2,000 Silchar NIT students have been participating in a hunger strike on campus in an effort to get the academic dean to step down. In an effort to get their actions taken, students have also addressed letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu.
