Donald Trump, a former US president, said that he anticipates being "arrested" on Tuesday as a result of hush money payments allegedly made to a porn star prior to the 2016 election. He also urged his fans to protest.
Citing a "leak" from the Manhattan district attorney's office, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday morning: "Leading Republican candidate & former President of the United States of America will be arrested on Tuesday of next week. Protest, take our nation back!"
The focus of the investigation is a $130,000 payment made just weeks before the 2016 elections to prevent Stormy Daniels, whose true name is Stephanie Clifford, from disclosing details of an alleged affair she had with Trump years before.
If Trump should be charged in the case, prosecutors are debating.
Trump, 76, would become the first former president to be charged with a crime if the Manhattan district attorney were to file an indictment.
In the event that a Manhattan grand jury indicts Trump, Trump's attorney said on CNBC on Friday night that his client would turn himself in to face criminal charges. Having an affair with Daniels has been denied by Trump.
