In 1993, the 3rd of May was declared World Press Freedom Day by the United Nations General Assembly. The reason behind observing wold press freedom day is because it acts as a reminder for the government to uphold the right to freedom of expression and to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press. Freedom of media is extremely important for its efficient functioning, which is why every year, 3 May is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day.
The entire world has been embracing this day and taking on Twitter to tweet to express their different point of view and one of those who tweeted was UN Secretary-General.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres tweeted wishing World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day, ” Without freedom of the press, there are no real democratic societies. Without freedom of the press, there is no freedom”.
As we all know press plays a very important role in shaping society by providing truth to the world showing the fact that was hidden, taking a risk in their lives to ensure the people who were watching the television is on the other side of the screen or reading the newspaper holding it could be aware of any danger they could have challenges in-country and all parts of the world.
However, the “freedom of speech” in some places was not given complete right as journalists have been arrested for raising their voices or giving strong opinions by people who are in power. Charging false criminal cases over them.
It is the duty as well as the right to put the truth only the truth and not fabrication to the world either in writing articles or reporting the news through television to the public to update daily incidents.
World Press Freedom Day celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluating press freedom globally, and defending the media from attacks on their independence. Yet the remembrance of those who lost theirs in this field.
