The European Parliament has approved a rule that will forbid the sale of new gas and diesel cars in the EU beginning in 2035 in an effort to accelerate the switch to electric vehicles (EVs). With the new regulations, new light-duty vehicles and passenger cars will have zero CO2 emissions by 2035. (an EU fleet-wide target to reduce CO2 emissions produced by new cars and vans by 100 per cent compared to 2021).
A technique to evaluate and report statistics on CO2 emissions over the course of a car or van's whole lifecycle that is sold on the EU market will be presented by the Commission by 2025. "This law promotes the development of low- and zero-emission automobiles. In order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, it includes a bold revision of the 2030 targets and a zero-emission target for 2035 "said European Parliament member Jan Huitema.
"Consumers will be able to drive and buy zero-emission vehicles for less money, and a second-hand market will develop more swiftly. It opens up sustainable driving to everyone "And Huitema. The Commission stated that manufacturers who produce between 1,000 and 10,000 new cars or between 1,000 and 22,000 new vans in a calendar year may be granted a derogation until the end of 2035 (those registering fewer than 1 000 new vehicles per year continue to be exempt).
Starting at the end of 2025, the Commission will release a report every two years to assess the development of zero-emission road transport. Negotiators from EU member states, the European Parliament, and the European Commission first agreed on the bill in October of last year. By 2033, a number of automakers, including Volkswagen, plan to focus exclusively on EV production in Europe.
