Ex-BJP leader Nupur Sharma gets police security amid ‘death threats’ over Prophet remark

According to news reports, the Delhi Police claimed on Tuesday that security was being provided to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family after a FIR was filed on a charge that she was receiving death threats as a result of her controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

Sharma had sought security after getting harassment and threats, according to reports, and the Delhi Police had filed a case against unnamed people as a result.

"Sharma and her family have been given police security after she said she had received threats and was being harassed because of her words," a source told PTI news agency.

Sharma's reported insulting remarks about the Prophet on a national televised debate have sparked a major diplomatic spat, with Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates messaging India to raise the issue. The government and the BJP have both denied making the remarks, with the latter suspending her on Sunday.

In addition to Sharma, the BJP's Delhi unit's media leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, was dismissed over the same matter. The saffron party also released a statement in which it stated that it respects all religions and firmly condemns insults to religious figures. Jindal had issued some tweets on the subject, which have now been deleted.
