Fisherman from Assam shot dead on India-Bangladesh border
According to officials, a BSF patrol unit that was patrolling the India-Bangladesh border in Assam's South Salmara district allegedly mistaken a fisherman for a smuggler and shot him to death.
The Border Security Force (BSF) patrol in Gudli village is accused of opening fire on Maniruzzaman, 24, on Wednesday night as he was laying fishing nets, according to locals. According to authorities, the injured fisherman passed away while being transported home.
Police conducted inquiries at the BSF camp, but the agency denied firing anyone.
Due to the death, there was considerable anxiety in the bordering territories, and in order to reduce it, more security personnel have been stationed in the border communities. The BSF trooper opened fire because he believed the fisherman was a smuggler, according to police, who speculated that it may have been a case of mistaken identity.
