Fresh clashes erupt in Manipur, curfew reinstated as houses burn
Following the clashes on May 22, fresh violence broke out in Manipur. The clashes, which took place in the New Checkon suburb of the state capital Imphal, involved the Meitei and Kuki populations. Violence is allegedly sparked by a dispute over available space in a nearby market. Following reports of fires in the area, the authorities immediately implemented a curfew.
Conflicts broke out this morning in Imphal's New Checkon Bazaar neighborhood, according to a report. There have been arson occurrences, and three people have been imprisoned for their alleged involvement.
The group was dispersed using the necessary strategies, including the use of force and the firing of teargas shells, according to news agency PTI. Military personnel stationed nearby reportedly responded to the incident. As a result, a few persons experienced minor injuries.
The Army and paramilitary forces have been enlisted to keep control of the situation. The state curfew from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. was reinstated in response to complaints of arson. The curfew was previously lowered to 4 p.m. from 6 a.m. After the state reported events like arson of homes and buildings, the internet service ban has been extended for an additional five days.
