The United States Geological Service said that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that shook coastal cities near Hokkaido in northern Japan on Saturday night did not trigger a tsunami alert. According to the USGS, the depth of the earthquake was 42.9 kilometers (27 miles). There were no reports of damage or injuries immediately published by major Japanese media sites.
