In a significant milestone, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat accused Brij Bhushan Sharma, head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), of sexual harassment. The best wrestler in India, along with Bajrang Punia, Sangeeta Phogat, Sonam Malik, and Anshu Malik, protested the federation's methods of operation at Jantar Mantar. According to Vinesh Phogat, who was quoted by the Indian Express, "Coaches and the WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Sharma have sexually harassed female wrestlers at national camps."

"Some of the national camp coaches have a history of harassing female wrestlers in a sexual manner. Additionally, the WFI president is complicit in sexual harassment. She said, "Many young female wrestlers have cried and complained about being sexually abused at national camps.Vinesh had criticised the federation earlier in the day in a tweet, alleging that the wrestlers don't receive support despite their best efforts. In an interview with PTI, Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia said, "Yeh ab aar paar ki ladai hai" (It's a fight to the finish). The protest was also joined by Bajrang's support team, including his trainer Sujeet Mann and physiotherapist Anand Dubey.

In February 2019, he was chosen to lead WFI for the third time in a row.Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary for the WFI, had earlier stated that he was unaware of the protest's motivation. He added that when the wrestlers who are protesting meet with the Federation, the problems will be rectified.

"I have no idea what this is about. However, we learned that certain wrestlers are sitting in protest from the letter to the WFI president. I've come to inquire about their issue, "told ANI, Tomar. The wrestlers who were in protest, according to Tomar, didn't bring up any issues with the federation. "They still haven't said what their complaint is. As of yet, no issue has been brought up with me or the Federation
