Rising tensions in valley districts prompt Manipur to enforce a total curfew
The Manipur state administration has reintroduced a complete curfew in five of its valley districts in response to rising tensions. On September 5, this preventive action was started in an effort to keep the area peaceful and stable. Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal, Imphal West, and Imphal East are among the districts that are impacted.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) issued a request for inhabitants of the valley districts to tear down an army barricade at Phougakchao Ikhai in the Bishnupur district, prompting the decision to reinstate the curfew. Just a few kilometers separate this location from the Churachandpur district, which is primarily populated by members of the Kuki community.
The Manipur government was troubled by the COCOMI's call for action, which prompted them to respond with the curfew. In addition to attempting to protect its inhabitants, the government urged the COCOMI to rethink its decision to approach the army roadblock at Phougakchao Ikhai.
The Manipur government also reached out to the COCOMI by pleading with them to support the security measures that have already been put in place. This action demonstrates the government's dedication to finding a peaceful and constructive solution to the problem.
