China's stranglehold is in vain: Ex-envoy writes to UN as Makki deemed a global terrorist

Makki is listed as a global terrorist by the UN, breaking China's stranglehold

Syed Akbaruddin, a former permanent representative of India to the UN, said on Tuesday that Beijing had lifted its technical hold on the designation of LeT chief Abdul Rehman Makki as a global terrorist by the 1267 UN Sanctions committee. "China's stranglehold over India's pursuit of justice against those who attacked our people is now in vain," he added. Makki was named a global terrorist by the UN, which gave India a significant diplomatic win and allowed the Security Council's Al Qaeda sanctions committee to unanimously add him to their list of sanctioned individuals.

After years of work by India and its partners, he was subject to an asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo by the UN Security Council's 1267 ISIL (Da'esh) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee.

"According to the news, China cannot stop India, and this idea is spreading around the world. India's efforts to bring those who attacked our people to account are now futile under China's chokehold, according to Syed Akbaruddin, who was quoted by ANI.

Many other people, including Sajid Mir, Abdul Rauf Azhar, Shahid Mahmood, and Talha Saeed, are slated to receive terrorist designations as well. The pursuit of justice for our people against terrorists with a base in Pakistan is what we are currently engaged in, he continued.

The former diplomat noted that whereas it had previously taken India more than ten years to designate Masood Azhar, this time it has only taken seven months to do it for Abdul Rehman Makki, underscoring the level of pressure India is successfully applying.

China was today compelled to release its "technical" hold on Makki's classification as a global terrorist by the 1267 UN Sanctions committee as a result of India winning the support of 14 out of 15 UN Security Council members. Under the guise of being the chairman of the foreign relations committee, Makki used to solicit money from the Middle East for the terrorist organization.
