Manipur Journalists Association protests intimidation in Imphal

In response to harassment by a terrorist organization about the dissemination of news, Manipur journalists staged a protest in Imphal on Wednesday. The Manipur Hill Journalists' Union, the Editors' Guild of Manipur, and the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union organized the sit-in protest together (MHJU).

There were other signs during the rally that stated, "Do not interfere with the independence of the press." At a meeting on Tuesday, it was decided to stage a sit-in at the Keishampat Leimajm Leikai crossroads in Imphal. In response to pressure and intimidation from a militant organization over the publication of a news item, media outlets in the state, including print and electronic media, have suspended the publication and broadcast of news since Monday.

A joint meeting between the organizers and Manipur's civil society organizations was also held on Wednesday afternoon at the Manipur Press Club's facilities. The combined meeting decided that the journalists will continue their regular jobs on Thursday in addition to pleading with people not to impede on the press's independence.
