Manipur mob attempts to remove Army barricade; 40 injured

On Wednesday, over 10,000 people gathered in the Bishnupur district of Manipur to demand the dismantling of an Army roadblock, causing a stampede that injured over 40 people. Security personnel used tear gas to disperse the crowd. According to a source in the defense, the standoff went on all day. The Central security personnel came under fire from armed criminals, and a crowd hurled rocks at them. In the event, three members of the Rapid Action group (RAF), a specialized anti-riot group, suffered injuries.

According to officials, hundreds of villagers defied the curfew at Oinam in the Bishnupur district and squatted in the middle of a road at around 2.30 p.m. to obstruct the movement of police and other members of the central forces who were traveling from Imphal to Phougakchao Ikhai.

State police troops halted demonstrators traveling to Phougakchao Ikhai around 11.40 am. They had set up a barrier about 2 km distant at Kwakta. The demonstrators broke over the barricade and moved in the direction of Phougakchao Ikhai despite a few tear gas shells being shot by the police.
