Meghalaya 27th Aug: Close to 35 Lakh Prizes Awarded To Winners At An Angling Competition

Thousands of enthusiastic anglers throng the ponds at Tuber Sohshrieh village, West Jaintia hills, Meghalaya to participate in a fishing competition, a famous sport in the state.

The event began at 9 am and ended at 3 pm. Each competitor was required to purchase a ticket at the cost of ₹3000 to enter the competition. More than three thousand participants were seen sitting around the edges of the ponds trying their luck to win the biggest prize on offer (1st ₹500,000, 2nd ₹400,000 ). New Alto 800 Maruti cars along with cash were awarded to those finishing 3rd to 7th place, 8th to 15th place were awarded ₹ 100000 each, and seven consolation prizes were also given out. The winner was determined by the weight of the fish that the angler managed to catch.

Anglers used baits such as silkworm, flour mixed with banana flavor, bee larva, red worm, soaked peas, etc. Throughout the day each competitor patiently tried their best to catch the biggest fish and there were scenes of people scrambling for the best spot to fish. People from all over Meghalaya participated and some camped overnight by the ponds to be on time for the start. Besides the anglers, there were vendors selling fishing equipment and baits for those who may run out of fishing baits or accidentally breaks their fishing rod. It was a fun and enjoyable event as we see those who caught a fish running about to get its weight measured to be eligible for the prizes.

Here we have several pictures and video of the event.

The 1st prize was bagged by an angler with the fish weighing 6.560 kg, runners up 5.268 kg, 2nd runners up 5.158 kg.
