Meghalaya: Clash between agitated teachers and police breaks out in Shillong

Contractual teachers  who were demonstrating in front of the Main Secretariat on Thursday when the police used tear gas canisters and used physical force to break them up. The teachers allegedly started acting violently, so the police shot a couple rounds of tear gas.
However, there were children and women among the protestors, according to the instructors, who also claimed that only male police officers were deployed.

Who gave the police the order to use tear gas on the unarmed instructors was not immediately clear. The tear gas shelling, according to the instructors, generated a commotion that injured some children and expectant ladies, although the police insisted that nobody was affected. However, the teachers were still able to approach the Secretariat's main entrance while yelling protests despite the tear gas.

The incident happened while the teachers and family members marched from the Kiang Nangbah memorial outside Shillong Civil Hospital to the Main Secretariat under the banner of the Meghalaya Government Lower Primary School Contractual Teachers' Association (MGLPSCTA).
For a month, the teachers have camped out in front of the Civil Hospital calling for their reinstatement.

After failing the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET) two years ago, over 800 contractual teachers lost their jobs. Since then, they have been protesting under the banner of the Meghalaya Government Lower Primary Contractual Teachers' Association (MGLPCTA).

According to an official, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang requested a meeting with the demonstrators, but they declined. MGLPCTA head Birbor Riangtem claimed that despite meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma seven times to address their problem, nothing was accomplished.
