The Meghalaya police bust a newly formed militant group, arresting 8 people including a juvenile
The National Liberation Council of Nongkyndong (NLCN), a militant organisation that recently attempted to establish itself in the Khasi-Jaintia region, was formed by seven individuals who were arrested by the Meghalaya police on Wednesday. Also taken into custody was a juvenile.
Davis NR Marak, deputy inspector general of police for Meghalaya's eastern range, claimed that the new group was formed in the Khasi-Jaintia region with the intent of waging war against the existing government and engaging in illegal activities like extortion, obtaining weapons and ammunition, recruiting and training armed cadres, setting up armed terrorist camps, and planning terrorist attacks.
The outfit's self-styled chairman, commander in chief, general secretary, area commander of West Khasi Hills, area commander of Jaitia Hills, a recruiter/record keeper, and three cadres were among those charged, according to the state police, who have withheld their names.
According to NR Marak, the threat was quickly addressed and neutralized by the police.
He continued, saying that information also suggested that the NLCN had forged alliances with other Naga militant groups and planned to send the first group of cadres for arms training to Nagaland on August 17.
At the Crime Branch police station in Eastern Range, a criminal case has been opened under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
