Meghalaya: State students trapped in Sikkim flesh flood, helpline number released

According to officials, at least 26 Meghalayan students are stuck in Sikkim after the flash flood cut off highways and bridges in the Himalayan state.  The Meghalaya government announced the activation of a helpline at 1800 345 3644 to assist anyone stranded in Sikkim.

"There are 31 Meghalayan students enrolled in Sikkim. An official stated that while efforts are being made to return the remaining 26 of them, five of them have already returned on their own.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated in a post on X that individuals impacted by the destruction in Sikkim can get in touch with Additional Director A. Ali and Deputy Director FB Ramsiej of the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education.

Paul Lyngdoh, a cabinet minister, stated on Friday that all essential measures are being taken to ensure the students return home safely.
"I haven't seen the numbers yet, but students are being picked up right now, and we hope to finish the evacuation process in two to three days," he said.

He claimed that Meghalaya police are keeping an eye on the situation together with their Sikkim counterparts. Sikkim officials reported on Friday night that 26 dead, including those of seven Army personnel, had been pulled out of the Teesta river's flash flood debris so far, as the search for the 142 people still missing continued.
