A Guntur-based NRI doctor has given the government medical college there her whole life savings, amounting to Rs 20 crore, in order to help build a new hospital block. The mother and child care unit at the hospital received the complete life savings donation from Dr. Uma Gavini, a physician living in the US.
The doctor from Andhra Pradesh who now works in the US, Dr. Uma Devi Gavini, donated her entire life savings to the government medical college in the Andhra Pradesh district of Guntur in order to build a mother and child care unit, or MCCU. She graduated from Guntur Medical College and now works as a doctor in the US.
The medical professional would donate approximately to Rs 20 crore to the Guntur Medical College Alumni of North America (GMCANA), the nodal organisation that has leased the 600-bed super speciality mother and child care facility. Four decades ago, Dr. Uma, who completed her MBBS in 1965, immigrated to the US. She was an expert in immunology and allergy treatment. Three years ago, her spouse, who was also a doctor, passed away.
At a GMCANA-sponsored fundraising event, the doctor revealed her decision. She declined Dr. Alla Srinivasa Reddy, president of the GMCANA, request to have the hospital block named after her. She consented to renaming it after her spouse at the urging of GMCANA members.
