A 12-year-old's murder in Garo Hills has sparked protests by hundreds of people seeking justice

Protesters seek justice in Meghalaya over 12-year-old's murder

In order to mourn the cruel murder of a 12-year-old girl from the nearby Jangrapara community and to demand justice for the victim and her family, many NGOs from the Phulbari - Chibinang area of the West Garo Hills organized a candlelight march yesterday night, August 10.  In the village of Chandigre, close to Chibinang, a candlelight service was organized.

There was a sizable crowd at the service, and everyone was there to demand justice for the girl and her parents.  The 12-year-old's body was discovered near her home around August 1 with her neck entirely severed and evidence of sexual assault prior to the murder. Later postmortem reports corroborated the minor's sexual abuse. Additionally, she was the only girl in her family.

Chanda M. Sangma, the main suspect, was subsequently apprehended by West Garo Hills police after information about his whereabouts was given. He fled following the incident earlier this week and was last seen around Jangrapara.
In a different sexual assault case, the offender was purportedly out on bond.

We have all been shocked by this murder and sexual assault. Such a horrible conduct requires punishment for the perpetrator. Hamit Marak, president of the Garo Students Union Chibinang unit, expressed sympathy to the victim's family who lost their only daughter.
