India is commemorating former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 97th birthday today (December 25, 2021). Vajpayee, known as a man of the people, was born in Gwalior in 1924 to a family of schoolteachers (Madhya Pradesh).

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (December 25, 1924 – August 16, 2018) was an Indian politician who served as Prime Minister of India for three periods, the first for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and then for a full term from 1999 to 2004.
Vajpayee was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a key leader of the party (BJP). He was a member of the Hindu nationalist volunteer organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was the first Indian prime minister to serve a complete term who was not a member of the Indian National Congress. He's also known for being a poet and a writer.
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration announced December 25, Vajpayee's birthday, to be Good Governance Day. In 2015, India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, was bestowed upon him by President Pranab Mukherjee.
