The first medical college in Guwahati was founded in the year 1960, according to the chief minister, to serve the requirements of residents of the state as well as those of neighbouring states. Since that time, the state's population has increased significantly, as has the number of students wishing to pursue a career in medicine. The government established medical colleges in several regions of the state in order to increase possibilities for medical education and cutting-edge healthcare services in response to the continuously expanding need.
But there was a long-felt need for a second medical college in Guwahati, the hub of the Northeast's economic and social activities. In a practical move to meet this need, the Government of Assam has taken on the task of opening a second medical college in Guwahati, complete with a 1000-bed hospital, academic building, and dormitories for boys and girls for the 100 MBBS students who enrol annually. As a result, Bright Star Investments Pvt Limited has proposed a CSR contribution of Rs 150 crore for the infrastructure expansion of this medical college's academic block, undergraduate, and intern hostels.
Sarma added that the Assam state government is working toward the goal of having a medical college in each district. In addition to the nine currently operating medical colleges, the government has already started the process of establishing 15 new ones. Seven medical colleges are being built out of the 15 new medical schools; these are located in Nalbari, Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Biswanath Chariali, and the second medical school in Guwahati. The government will begin work on three further medical colleges proposed for Sivasagar, Karimganj, and Goalpara very soon, in addition to the five additional medical colleges that will be built this month at Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur, and Dhemaji. With 24 medical colleges, Assam would have a far greater supply of physicians and healthcare facilities.
The Chief Minister added that the number of MBBS seats has increased from 726 in 2014 to 1200 in 2022 as a result of the expansion of medical colleges in the State. There were 395 Post Graduate (PG) seats available in Assam as of 2014. The total number of PG seats grew to 711 in 2022. As a result, there are now more physicians available. 44 super-specialty seats are now available in various institutions run by the Assam government. Additionally, when the intended medical colleges' construction is complete, the state would have 2700 MBBS seats, greatly boosting the possibility for medical education in Assam.
The Chief Minister conveyed assurance that the signing of the MoU marked the start of something fresh for Assam. He predicted that more of these partnerships would form in the coming days, greatly enhancing the state's medical education.
