US threatens to ban TikTok if the app is not sold

According to the US authorities, TikTok must be sold in order to avoid being banned from the nation. The Chinese startup ByteDance's video-sharing app is accused of creating a national security concern owing to information obtained from millions of users.

A forced sale, according to reports, would not alter the company's data flows or access, the company claimed.

US authorities have long expressed concern that the Chinese government would have access to the popular app's data.
The US government under US President Joe Biden wants ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok to make a clear break with China, according to the WSJ.
According to the publication, ByteDance was unanimously advised to divest from TikTok by the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS), which monitors national security issues.

A representative for TikTok stated that the reporting was exaggerated and that it was unclear exactly what "divestiture" meant in real-world situations.
The representative stated, "If defending national security is the goal, divestment doesn't fix the problem: a change in ownership would not impose any additional constraints on data flows or access".
