Violence erupts in Kanpur as Muslims clash with police; 6 injured, several detained

On Friday, violence erupted in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, as members of the Muslim community clashed with police. At least six people were hurt in the incident.

According to reports, the violence erupted after police baton-charged some residents in the Becongunj neighbourhood near Yatimkhana. Hundreds of people took to the streets to demonstrate. After that, 16 people were arrested. The injured were sent to the hospital right away.

After Friday prayers, some locals, including merchants, reportedly conducted a closure and staged a parade in protest over an alleged insult to Prophet Mohammad. Soon after, a brawl erupted.

While the situation was initially brought under control, the violence flared up again a short time later, with at least two rounds fired. Police have reportedly requested further reinforcements, according to reports. The stone pelting has ceased for the time being.

An inquiry is underway, according to Joint Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari, and attempts are being made to bring the situation under control. A number of top officials have arrived at the location.
