Vital meeting on border disputed areas between Assam and Meghalaya today
On Saturday, the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya will meet in Guwahati for what could be the final meeting before the two states sign a boundary agreement.
Six of the 12 areas of contention that were judged less problematic have been agreed upon by the two states.
On Friday, the State Cabinet received an update on the Assam border dispute.
Tarabari, Gizang, and Hahim in West Khasi Hills, Boklapara and Khanapara-Pillangkata in Ri-Bhoi, and Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills are the six areas of disagreement chosen for resolution in the first phase.
"We will meet with the Assam Chief Minister in Guwahati tomorrow and hope to get a final agreement on the six places," Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said.
Negotiations between Assam and Meghalaya on six disputed territories began last year and are nearly complete. On Thursday, Sangma stated that the two states had reached a deal on the six sites to the tune of about 98 percent.
Following Saturday's meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is slated to convene a joint meeting with officials from both states to resolve the six-point issue.
