With a heavy heart, Shillong bid goodbye to Neil Nongkynrih; A Tribute

With a heavy heart, fans, friends, and close relatives said their goodbyes to Neil Nongkynrih, the famed concert pianist and creator of the Shillong Chamber Choir. After a brief illness, the singer died in Mumbai's Reliance Hospital on Wednesday, leaving a huge vacuum in the world of music as well as in the social and cultural arena in his native Meghalaya.

He was a lovable character who was also one of the most well-known musicians. His path to success is admirable; although hailing from one of India's smallest states, he has become an international icon who has received affection from all corners of the globe.

The Shillong Chamber Choir, which he founded, won the popular reality show India's Got Talent, propelling Nongkynrih to national prominence. Neil and the Choir were invited to some of the most exciting events around the country, where they astonished the crowd with their distinctive approach and endeared themselves to music maestros, including A. R. Rahman, who paid them a visit in Shillong.

When his motherland, Shillong, bid him farewell today after his last rites, it seemed as if it was crying for its son. A priceless jewel has been lost and will never be replaced.
