After none of their students passed this year’s High School Leaving Certificates (HSLC) or Class X board exams, the Assam government has decided to close 34 state-run schools. In response, state education minister Ranoj Pegu stated that spending government money on schools with a zero success rate is pointless. “The basic responsibility of schools is to provide education. If a school cannot guarantee that its children pass the class X exam, there is no use in keeping these schools open,” Pegu told TOI.
“The government cannot spend public money on schools with a zero-percentage-point success rate,” he continued. According to reports, seven of these schools are located in the Karbi Anglong district, five in Jorhat and five in Cachar, two in Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, and Nagaon, and one in Golaghat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong Chirang, Darrang, and Dibrugarh. The Aam Aadmi Party, on the other hand, was outraged by the Assam government’s decision.
According to a state secondary education department official, the closed schools will be amalgamated with other adjacent government institutions, where instructors and pupils will be housed.
Aside from individuals who had no success, those with a pass percentage of less than 10% were included on the list. The state government also announced plans to close roughly 800 state-run schools with fewer than 30 students.
