The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Friday that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist in numerous portions of northwest India and certain sections of east India.
Because of the severe heat, the IMD has issued an orange warning for all of northwest India, central India, and Jharkhand on Friday and Saturday, as well as a yellow alert for practically the whole country except a few pockets till May 3. An orange alert means local governments and disaster management agencies should be prepared for disasters, while a yellow alert means to keep an eye on things and be informed.
Maximum temperatures in widespread areas hit 43-46°C on April 28th, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), and this strong heat will last until May 2nd. It referred to a warning issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which stated that the unusual heat will accelerate the melting of snow and ice in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkwa, potentially resulting in glacial lake outburst floods or flash floods in sensitive parts.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said it’s too soon to attribute India and Pakistan’s excessive heat on climate change, but it’s in line with what to expect in a changing environment.
Climate and health specialists have also cautioned that the continuing heatwave is wreaking havoc on public health, which must be thoroughly monitored.
On the 29th and 30th of April, heatwave conditions are predicted in some regions of west Rajasthan, with severe heatwave conditions on May 1. Heatwave conditions are also expected in some/isolated parts of Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh over the next 5 days; Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and northern parts of Telangana over the next 4 days; east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand on April 29 and 30; and Bihar, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat State, Madhya Maharashtra on
“Over northwest India, we estimate a minor increase in temperature today and tomorrow. It’s possible that they’ll be higher than the highs of Thursday. Temperatures in east India are expected to drop starting May 1. Pre-monsoon activity is expected to be good over east India in the coming days, according to models. Around May 2 to 4, thunderstorms will be active over regions of northwest India, particularly the western Himalayas. After that, maximum temperatures may return to normal,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Skymet Weather’s climate change and meteorology division.
