A Local Train Derailed And Climbed Over The Platform, No Casualty Reported

Chennai: A train derailment occurred at the beach station on Sunday but no customers or employees were affected because it was an empty EMU (empty Electric Multiple) that was being moved from the yard to the platform. The train is likely to have proceeded on the busy Beach-Tambaram route if it had been running.

When the driver applied the brakes, a malfunction broke down the process and it is suspected to be the cause of the incident. The investigation will go on to assess why there was a breakdown in the system.

“The rake was fully empty and (there were) no passengers on board. No injury to any passengers (was reported) on the platform. Shunter jumped out of the rake and no injury was sustained,” said S Guganesan, PR Chief for Southern Railway.

Graphic footage shows the rake floating above the track and crashing into the station.
