Another Big Jolt to BJP in UP, Seventh MLA Mukesh Verma Resigns

Another huge setback for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh comes as Mukesh Verma, a BJP MLA in the state, resigns from the party ahead of the state’s assembly elections next month. In the span of three days, a seventh MLA has resigned from the party.

Mukesh Verma, a lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh, became the seventh member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to resign from the party only days before the Assembly elections. Verma indicated his support for Swami Prasad Maurya, a renowned backward caste politician who resigned from the state cabinet earlier this week, after withdrawing from the BJP’s primary membership.

“Swami Prasad Maurya is our leader,” Verma said reporters after arriving at Maurya’s residence in Lucknow. “We will back whatever choice he chooses. Many other leaders will join us in the coming days.”

“All of Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s work is being undone, and the BJP government is not looking out for anyone’s best interests,” he remarked.

On Wednesday, Maurya confirmed his meeting with Samajwadi Party (SP) head Akhilesh Yadav, who has previously welcomed him into the party fold, and said he will make a final decision on his political future on January 14. Chauhan further stated that he will decide on his next course of action on Friday, implying that the dissident BJP leaders were on the same page in terms of the future course of action.
