Approximately 25,000 kgs of drugs seized as part of a huge Narcotics Control Bureau operation would be burnt in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Saturday, officials said. Shah will also preside over a regional meeting on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ in order to address the drug situation in the northeastern region and potential solutions. The summit will be attended by the chief ministers and DGPs of the northeastern states.

On Saturday, the NCB will destroy around 11,000 kg of narcotic drugs. Additionally, Assam (2,531 kg) and Tripura (11,144 kg) will destroy around 13,675 kg of confiscated narcotics (heroin, ganja, codeine cough syrup, narcotic tablets), an official said, adding that approximately 25,000 kg of drugs will be burned. To demonstrate the Narendra Modi government’s dedication to making society drug-free, the NCB, which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has launched a specific mission to destroy captured drugs beginning June 1.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of independence, the NCB decided that during this special 75-day campaign, 75,000 kg of drugs would be destroyed by all NCB regional units. The NCB met the target in just 60 days, well ahead of schedule, and reaffirmed its commitment to the nation in the fight against drug abuse. Another officer stated that by July 30, approximately 82,000 kg of seized drugs had been burned. The home minister began the process of eliminating 31,000 kg of drugs by various field units of NCB through virtual medium at a national conference held on July 30 in Chandigarh as part of this campaign. Approximately 1,09,000 kg of confiscated narcotics were destroyed during this particular eradication drive from June 1-7 by the NCB , the official said.
