An officer claimed a man who was arrested for his alleged role in a gang rape of a girl was shot and injured while attempting to flee from police custody in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Thursday.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police S S Panesar, the accused, who along with two others had reportedly raped the girl on Monday night, had been detained and was being escorted to a location where he had hidden the mobile phone with which they had filmed the rape act.
As they got closer to the Dholmara Ranipur Tea Garden, the accused abruptly turned and stole a police officer’s service handgun, attempting to fire at the police squad.
According to Panesar, another police officer opened fire on the accused to regain control of the situation, and the accused received bullet wounds to his right leg. According to the ASP, the accused was admitted to the Kokrajhar Civil Hospital for treatment.
On Monday night in Dholmara village, the father of a 16-year-old girl filed a FIR with the Kokrajhar police station, stating that three youths raped his daughter while she was coming from a grocery store.
