Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti-The Horse from Heaven, an Assamese short film, will now compete in the Best Live Action Short Film category. After “Village Rockstars,” which was India’s official entry to the Awards and was nominated for The Best Foreign Language Film, Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti-The Horse from Heaven is the second Assamese film to receive an Academy Award nomination.
The subject of absurdist belief and how it might result in religious zeal is the focus of the short film Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti—The Horse from Heaven, starring veteran Assamese actor Atul Pachani. The short film also features the Assamese folk dance Ojapali.
The act of elevating a donkey and placing it on a divine pedestal to the point where the neighbours begin lusting after the animal makes for amusement while also making fun of our culture, which would accept anything at face value and refuse to consider its implications.
The director of the film Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap said, “It feels like a dream. Even though I don’t think an award can ever validate any piece of ‘art’ or ‘non-art’, the Oscar is still a dream I haven’t given up on since I first realized I wanted to be a filmmaker.”
