Compounding their struggles, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL late in the season, raising concerns about his availability for Week 1 of the upcoming year. However, as he undergoes rehabilitation, Mahomes stands to benefit financially from a recent restructuring of his contract, which has created significant cap space for the team.

Contract Restructuring Benefits Both Mahomes and the Chiefs

As part of the contract overhaul, Mahomes will receive a fully guaranteed roster bonus of $44.05 million, along with an additional $10.4 million. This restructuring transforms his salary, which is typically dispersed throughout the season, into a lump sum payment, resulting in a substantial financial boost. Since signing this landmark deal, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles and Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. However, last season presented challenges; after reaching the Super Bowl once again, the Chiefs faced defeat at the hands of the Eagles in a rematch that ended 40-22. Their performance throughout the season raised concerns about several gaps within the roster that cannot be solely addressed through the draft.

To navigate this, the Chiefs may look to release higher-paid players, with lineman Jawaan Taylor’s $19.5 million salary being a potential target for reduction. Further contract restructurings could also be on the horizon to enhance their cap space.
