Given that the Russian offensive in Ukraine has been going on for more than five months, India has voiced concern about shelling near the fuel storage of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
Shelling hit the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant ahead of Thursday’s meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which was intended to address safety issues at the plant.
Russia and Ukraine both claim that the other struck the compound on Thursday and last week. Ruchira Kamboj, India’s permanent representative to the UN, spoke at the UNSC briefing on Thursday and urged restraint between all parties to prevent endangering the security and safety of nuclear installations.
Kamboj continued, India is keeping track of events relating to the security and safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power installations.
“We have noted the most recent information available with regard to the nuclear power plants and facilities in Ukraine, including the updates issued on August 9 and 10 by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and today’s updates on developments,” Kamboj stated during the UNSC briefing. She reminded the security council that India had constantly demanded an immediate end to violence and an end to bloodshed ever since the Russian-Ukrainian conflict broke out.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN continued, “While we are debating the nuclear dimension of this crisis, we also need to be acutely cognisant of the impact of the Ukraine conflict on poor nations, notably on the supply of food grains, fertiliser, and gasoline.
