In Assam, where elections for two seats in the upper house of parliament were held on Thursday, the Congress lost a Rajya Sabha seat to the BJP. The other seat was won by the BJP with no opposition. The Congress suspended an MLA for reportedly squandering his vote by writing “One” instead of “1” on the ballot paper, and the vote count for the Congress-led opposition’s candidate went down.
The suspension of Congress MLA and former minister Siddique Ahmed has harmed Ripun Bora’s chances. The Congress declared in a statement that Siddique Ahmed “deliberately defied the three-line whip.”
“We won both the Rajya Sabha seats from Assam (one by the BJP and the other by UPPL, our partner) by a massive margin of 11 and 9 votes respectively,” Assam’s Chief Minister remarked.
